Saturday 6 May 2023 - Westminster Abbey in London

KING CHARLES III CORONATION

How it works...

What is a Coronation?

Although it is not officially required to be crowned in order to be King,  it is the formal and religious ceremony of placing the crown upon the head of the sovereign to declare their updated Title, Powers and Position as Head of  the Church of England.

What Will it Involve?

A Procession to Westminster Abbey will be made by the King and Queen Consort, where other members of the Royal family and approximately 2,200 guests await.

A Presentation of the Monarch is made by the Arch Bishop of Canterbury, followed by King Charles III's Oath to uphold the law and Church of England. Whilst covered from view, his hands, breast and head is anointed by oil, then he is presented with items as part of his investiture. This includes the Royal Orb, Scepture, Rod of Gold with Enamelled Dove - all Symbols of varying qualities - before the Crown is placed upon his head. Finally he moves to the Throne for all to Kneel and pay Homage to the King. A Gospel Choir will Perform and the Queen Consort will be anointed and crowned in the same way.
